If the grapevine and cha cha cha aren’t your idea of working
out, you might want to try the YMCA’s boot camp aerobics class.
Unlike some aerobics classes that are structured and often
include dance moves, boot camp aerobics is an interval workout
incorporating both aerobics and weights, said YMCA boot camp
instructor Laurie Peterson.
YMCA member John Starcevich, 49, said he was taking a regular
aerobics class when he heard about the boot camp workout.
Starcevich tried it and said that he liked the change of pace.
“It’s more intense,” he said.
For Dianna Blom, 44, Peterson is a real motivator.
“She works me harder than I work myself,” she said.
Class member Colleen Boyle said she was looking for a more
challenging workout. She found it in the boot camp class. Like
Blom, Boyle said she likes the way Peterson leads the class.
Peterson said people shouldn’t let the name of the class scare
them away.
“I try to stress to people that it is for all fitness levels,”
she said. During the class Peterson demonstrates moves at low,
medium and high intensity. Class members get to work at their own
fitness level.
“It’s basic moves. You can start out low. The more you go, the
easier it gets,” she assured.
According to Butte Family YMCA Health Enhancement Director Holly
McCamant, the boot camp workout is very popular at the Y.
“People like the variety,” she said. McCamant said the evening
classes on Tuesday and Wednesday at are well-suited to those
looking to workout on their way home from the office.
“It’s a great stress reliever,” she added.
McCamant said that the YMCA offers a variety of opportunities
for aerobic exercise at both the Community YMCA and the Family
Fitness Center. Classes include options such as water aerobics,
spinning, regular aerobics, senior aerobics and kick boxing.
Boot camp aerobics is held each Tuesday and Thursday from 5:10
to 6 p.m. at the Butte Community YMCA, with a new class just
beginning at the Family Fitness center Mondays and Wednesdays from
5:45 to 6:30 a.m.
