There’s going to be a big Girl Scout singalong Saturday in
Vienna, Va. But these are no ordinary scouts.
The nine girls from Boston are members of the tween pop singing
group Girl Authority. They are playing two concerts at Jammin’ Java
— the first is a sold-out show for area scouts — as part of a tour
for their second CD.
‘‘Being up there onstage, you have the lights and the audience
and hear the applause, it’s an amazing experience,’’ says
15-year-old Jacqueline. ‘‘It’s kind of hard to explain.’’
The Girl Authority singers don’t reveal their last names.
Instead, they have stage identities: Jacqueline is All-Star Girl;
Tarr, Rock n’ Roll Girl; Alex, Fashion Girl; Carly, Glamour Girl;
Jess, Boho Girl; Gina, Urban Girl; Kate, Party Girl; Crystal,
Country Girl; and Zoe, Preppy Girl.
‘‘We all have a special persona that fits us best. I love
sports, and I play softball and tennis,’’ says All-Star Girl, lead
singer on the Cyndi Lauper song ‘‘Shine.’’
Other songs on the Girl Authority set list include high-energy,
family-friendly favorites ‘‘Holiday,’’ ‘‘Life Is a Highway,’’ ‘‘We
Are Family’’ and ‘‘Vacation.’’
The girls met more than five years ago while participating in a
Massachusetts theater company (all nine have appeared at some point
in ‘‘Annie’’).
Offstage, they are a lot like their fans. They are involved in
Girl Scouts — forming their own troop — cheerleading, school
activities and sleepover parties.
The girls also are fans of ‘‘American Idol’’ winners Kelly
Clarkson and Carrie Underwood. However, their dream of auditioning
for the contest won’t come true; as professionals, the Girl
Authority singers are not eligible.
To the group’s young fans, Girl Authority is the next best thing
to Hannah Montana — though on a smaller scale. The pop princesses’
first CD sold more than 100,000 copies.
‘‘It’s really cool to see someone in the audience and then see
them 20 minutes later waiting in line for us to sign a T-shirt,’’
says Party Girl Kate, 12, known for her sparkly dresses and bubbly
personality. ‘‘Knowing they had a great time gives us a really good
feeling.’’
