BOZEMAN – The Montana State Parks Foundation teamed up with 82 volunteers at Missouri Headwaters State Park for a cleanup day rooted in giving back. While blizzards swept through Bozeman and surrounding areas, volunteers arrived in Three Forks to find blue skies and a snow-free park. What followed was a full day of showing up for a place that has given generations of visitors joy, peace, adventure and connection.
Together, this group made a huge impact. Volunteers cleared roadside trash and litter, cleaned fire rings, scooped dog waste, improved trails and removed hazards from day-use areas and campgrounds. They also planted new trees in honor of Arbor Day and carried out beaver mitigation work to help protect those plantings for the future.
What stood out most was "the why." Volunteers shared stories of their connection to the park, from those who’ve taken on what some call the “Headwaters Biathlon” (paddle through the park on the Madison, take out at the Headwaters confluence, then bike back along the Missouri Headwaters Trail) to scout troops, church groups, and neighbors looking for a way to give back. The through-line was clear: this place matters.
A huge thank you to everyone who made the day possible. Our volunteers, Montana Gift Corral for funding the cleanup, Big Sky Wind Drinkers for grilling, Sawdust & Steel Brewing for libations, Old Faithful & Friends for event support, Phoenix Garden Center for donating trees, AmeriCorps member Cassidy for leading behind-the-scenes planning and our partners at Missouri Headwaters State Park, who never stop working for their park.
