HELENA, Mont. — Governor Greg Gianforte today encouraged Montana’s Scholarship Granting Organizations (SGO) to participate in a new federal program aimed at expanding education freedom for Montana students.
In January 2026, Gov. Gianforte announced Montana opted in to the new Federal Tax Credit Scholarship Program to provide Montanans with a tax credit of up to $1,700 when they donate to nonprofits that provide scholarships to K-12 students. To qualify, SGOs must meet federal requirements and be verified by the Montana Department of Revenue.
“In January, I was proud to opt-in to this federal program that gives Montanans another incentive to support the success of the next generation,” Gov. Gianforte said. “To all Scholarship Granting Organizations, please reach out to verify your status with the Montana Department of Revenue so generous Montanans can provide more students and parents the ability to choose the learning path that works best for them.”
In a letter to Student Scholarship Organizations, the Montana Department of Revenue indicated that it, on behalf of the state, must certify and submit to the U.S. Treasury Department a list of qualifying SGOs in Montana by December 31.
