Brett Badovinac became the first Butte resident in 20 years to win the Open Division of the 2017 Montana State Singles Open Handball Championship, held Sunday at the Elks.

Badovinac beat Missoula’s Moe Johnson, 21-9, 21-6, becoming the first champion from Butte since Butch Starin won in 1998.

Badovinac climbed the ladder to his latest handball championship by beating Nate Guza (Missoula) in the quarterfinals.

He reached the finals with a 21-12, 21-17 win over Sean Sandau, also from Missoula, in the semifinals.

Don Foley beat Sandau for third place in the division.

Other winners included Butte’s Mike Hitchcock in Golden Masters (50+), Jay Sponer (Fargo, North Dakota) in the Golden Masters (60+) and Dan Scilley (Luther) in Diamond Masters (70+). Maleki McKell (Billings) captured the A Division title, Dylan Urbani, of Bozeman, won the B Division, and Butte’s Kale Guldseth came out on top in the C Division.
