Butte High heavyweight Jeff Queer joined Dillon's Brent Tezak and Pat Griffin in advancing to the Tom LeProwse Invitational semifinals, leading the Bulldog wrestling team to a fifth-place team finish after Day 1 on Friday in Bozeman.
Queer picked up a pair of quick pins — neither early opponent lasted more than 1 minute, 5 seconds — before winning his quarterfinal against Huntley Project's Trey Copeland due to injury.
Four of Queer's teammates — Wyatt Queer (103 pounds), Tyler Casey (113), Tyler Vetter (126) and Quinn Sullivan (145) — dropped their quarterfinal matchups. Vetter was the closest to staying alive, dropping a tough 8-5 decision to Colstrip's Jackson Currier.
The Bulldogs finished the day with 87 team points in a tie with Helena High. Dillon (36) was 20th, Whitehall (23) was 22nd, and Butte Central (14) was 25th.
Tezak (152) took the long route into the semifinals for Dillon. After taking an 8-3 decision and a pin after nearly 3 minutes of action in his early matches, he hung on to edge Capital's Jack Murphy with a 3-1 decision in the quarters.
Griffin (170) joined him in the semis by taking down Skyview's Brenner Bushfield in 3:30 for his third pin of the day — spending nearly 8 minutes combined on the mat to earn the honors.
Heavyweight Dawson Hoerauf lost his quarterfinal after a pair of early pins to lead Whitehall's effort.
