Thomas Cooper scored a game-high 31 points, including the go-ahead layup with less than a minute remaining, and the University of Calgary fended off the Montana Tech men's basketball team, 70-67, in an exhibition game Tuesday at the Cactus Classic in Phoenix.

The Orediggers (6-6, 0-2 Frontier) tied the tight contest for an eighth and final time at 64-64 when Sadiq Inuwa went 1 of 2 at the free-throw line with 54 seconds remaining. But Cooper raced down the floor to put the Dinos (13-1) back ahead, and Calgary won a free throw contest down the stretch.

Cooper hit three 3-pointers on the night and went 16 of 17 on free throws to lift CU. David Kapinga added 12 points in the victory.

Tech fell despite out-shooting Calgary from the floor, .509-.426, and out-rebounding their opponent, 39-30. But the Dinos were 23 of 31 on free throws, while Tech went just 7 of 18.

Inuwa's 13 points and nine rebounds led the Diggers, while Dylan Pannabecker added 12 points.

Tech wraps up its stay in Phoenix against Arizona Christian at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

Western 87, Warner Pacific 75

Shyke Smalls hit five 3-pointers and scored a game-high 22 points to lift the Bulldog men over the Knights at the Cactus Classic.

Marcus Payne added 16 points and seven rebounds for the Bulldogs (9-1, 2-0), while Dom Robinson had 14 points and five assists.

Charles Honest led the Knights (5-6) with 15 points, but the Oregon club had 24 turnovers that turned into 29 points for Western.
