Montana Standard Jan. 20 "DUI bill is a good idea" When i read this article, I realized how little I knew about DUI offenses, and I was appalled by the extreme lack of accountability. It is part of the reason we have one of the worst records in the nation of alcohol related accidents and deaths. I believe we should join those states that make the first DUI a felony and anyone receiving a third has their license revoked. The "fifth and subsequent" should never happen.
Russell Rowland in his absorbingly excellent book "Fifty-six Counties" asks the question we all should as to Montana being the last best where everyone wants to live and yet we have these high, high rates of alcohol problems and a record high rate of suicides. Stricter DUI law are a very necessary band aid, but we need to strengthen our outreach and listen harder to what these people who seek oblivion and escape do not say. Lets not wait for a fourth offense to start dealing with the problem.
