Tech's name change
This comment is sent in response to the following article: "We’re going to be innovators": Montana Tech plans changes, including to its name (April 10)
Dan Trudnowski argues that if Montana Tech doesn’t adapt to change, it’s “not going to be competitive.” If he and the administration at Tech are in earnest, they might consider making deeper, and arguably more pressing, changes than those mentioned. Petroleum Engineering is currently Tech's single largest major at a time when the rest of the country (and the world) is seeking alternative and renewable energy solutions. Given the sheer amount of money and technology donated to the campus by the petroleum industry, it’s not terribly surprising if administrators are unwilling to threaten this relationship. But if the school is not prepared to move way from fossil fuels in the near future, they might at least consider incorporating their true “special focus" into whatever new name is decided upon. I propose Big Oil U.
