Last month, Helena Mayor Wilmot Collins delivered a letter to NorthWestern Energy CEO Bob Rowe raising some serious issues regarding our electricity rates, the need to focus new production on renewable energy, NorthWestern’s commitment to cleaning up the environmental devastation at the Colstrip power plant, and the corporation’s commitment to helping the Colstrip community make a transition to clean energy as economic forces undermine coal’s viability as an energy source.
I applaud Mayor Collins for this courageous act of leadership. Too often public officials remain silent in the face of corporate abuse of power. These issues are particularly critical when the corporation is a monopoly, which NorthWestern Energy is, and their product is a necessity, which electricity certainly is. Who will speak on behalf of ratepayers if not our elected officials?
Silence in the face of injustice is consent. Mayor Collins chose to speak out publicly about the electricity bills Helena citizens pay and I hope other Montana public officials take notice.
