It is always the right time to honor nurses.
But this week — Nurses' Week — and this year, the year of the COVID plague, is the perfect time for all of us to remember, respect and revere what all nurses do for us. We are in awe of every one of them. We extend a heartfelt "thank you" to every nurse.
For the second straight year, The Montana Standard today publishes a special section honoring nurses in our midst. Last year, we picked nine amazing nurses from our community. This year, we picked 10 more.
More than 50 nurses were nominated for this honor by readers of The Montana Standard. Then, readers chose their favorite from the nominations. And that turned out to be St. James Healthcare medical-surgical nurse Cody Symons.
For the second year, the selection panel for the rest of the honorees was Father Patrick Beretta; Karen VanDeveer of Montana Tech; and David McCumber of The Montana Standard.
These were the unanimous selections of the group:
Jessica Klapan, nursing coordinator at AWARE Inc.; Colleen Cooney, labor & delivery nurse at St. James Healthcare; Theresa Dennehy, public health nurse at the Butte-Silver Bow Health Department; Kathryn McGrath, ICU nurse at St. James; Betty Waren, pediatric nurse at Southwest Montana Community Health Center; Shamia Forman, hospice nurse at Senior Solutions; Kristal Tutty, medical-surgical nurse at Community Hospital of Anaconda; Cim LeProwse, nurse practitioner at Big Sky Family Health Clinic; and Janet Coe, interim nursing director at Montana Technological University.
There were no bad choices to be made from the nominee list. Every nominated nurse is heroic, and each one has made an impact on countless lives. But these 10 nurses, in so many ways, exemplify the grace and the wonder of their calling. We are proud to feature them in this year's special section, cosponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Montana and City Brew. We found their personal stories to be inspiring and unforgettable. We hope you will too.
Please join us in honoring these 10 heroes among us.
