Thank you, Father Beretta. Your thoughts are always healing and are appreciated.
Father, as you point out, following the basic tenets of the CDC guidelines: wearing a mask, keeping physical distance, and avoiding gatherings require the most minimal of sacrifice. Since you are a member of Governor Gianforte’s COVID taskforce, I am very thankful to see this sentiment, and I truly hope he listens to you and more importantly follows the guidelines himself. There is just as much freedom (and infinitely more goodness) in choosing to wear a mask, as choosing not to wear one, and many people who won’t follow a mandate might follow his example.
First though, he has to set one. The image I remember most clearly from Election Day was the Governor-Elect on stage with a crowd donning a huge smile and an ornate belt-buckle representing the three crosses on Calvary. Nobody was wearing a mask. Unfollowed mandates and passing responsibility downward have led Montana to the brink and a change is obviously needed. You and your peers on the new COVID taskforce have the unenviable responsibility to turn the tide. As you do, I pray the new Governor follows your advice on following the guidelines and I hope the example of the Penitent Thief from his belt-buckle serves as a reminder that it’s never too late to change.
Amen, may we learn to all work together in harmony to overcome this virus attack.
