What is Newspapers in Education?

montana standard newspapers in education

The Montana Standard’s Newspaper In Education (NIE) program is designed to provide newspapers to area teachers and schools and the opportunity to share this free service with their students. The newspaper is a daily, up-to-date textbook of information about their community and the world around them. Teachers use the Montana Standard to teach current events, math, reading, science, business and much more.

The Newspaper in Education programs have a measurable and positive impact on schools and children that utilize the newspaper in the classroom.

NIE in your Community

The Montana Standard’s NIE program is available to all Southwest Montana schools that may be interested. We deliver papers as far away as Philipsburg, Dillon, Three Forks, Melrose, Sheridan, Deer Lodge as well as Butte and Anaconda and other surrounding areas. We also provide papers from first grade through college.

Through our program, we provide teacher guides, worksheets and special tab publications during the school year. We conduct contests for kids like "Design an Ad" and "Scavenger Hunt," as well as provide Parade Magazine's poetry contests and links to other programs.

How we are able to provide papers

The Montana Standard is able to provide papers to schools through fundraising and business sponsorships. Every year, we call hundreds of Southwest Montana area businesses for contributions or sponsorships for our NIE program. The Montana Standard also holds block sales, pet pinup contests and other efforts to help with additional funding.

Typically, the Standard works with between 100 and 160 teachers and almost every school request papers. There are between 4,000 and 5,000 requests for papers each day, depending on paper content and special publications. The need is great. If you would like to help us develop this great program, make a contribution today.

“In a world that is surrounded by various forms of communication, it is an asset to have our local newspaper. The Montana Standard has offered the communities of southwest Montana a free and easily accessible source of information to the classroom. Simply by contacting their staff, a teacher can receive weekly newspapers to use as a supplement to any curriculum. As a Newspaper in Education participant, I am grateful to the organization done by The Montana Standard as well as the generous donations offered by our local businesses. Because of you, our young students are becoming better readers, especially of newsprint communication.”

“I use NIE newspapers in my room daily. I have students use them for current events in my world history class. I love having the papers because students also like to read them when they are all done with their work. It keeps them up to date on what is going on in the world. My students really benefit from the newspapers. Thanks NIE.”
