A 59-year-old Belgrade man died Monday afternoon after crashing his motorcycle in Madison County, according to the Montana Highway Patrol.

His passenger, a 54-year-old woman also from Belgrade, was thrown about 30 feet and injured during the crash. She was taken to Madison Valley Medical Center, according to the MHP report.

Both victims were wearing helmets.

The man was riding about 10 miles north of Ennis on U.S. Highway 287 when the motorcycle left the road and went into a gravel pit, hitting a small ditch and throwing the motorcycle and its riders into the air, the report states.

Alcohol and drugs were suspected as factors in the crash, according to MHP.

The man's name has not been released. The Madison County coroner did not return calls Tuesday.
