The Independent Record in Helena will begin printing The Great Falls Tribune’s daily newspaper and other print products beginning July 1.
The Independent Record currently prints Butte's newspaper, The Montana Standard, and the regional Mini Nickel publication, all of which are owned by Lee Enterprises.
“Bringing Great Falls into the fold provided a lot of efficiencies that could be shared between the newspapers,” said Anita Fasbender, publisher and president of the Independent Record and The Montana Standard.
The Independent Record will also begin printing the Global Guardian, a weekly newspaper distributed at Malmstrom Air Force Base in Great Falls.
Tribune Editor Grady Higgins told the Associated Press 21 people will lose their jobs when the Great Falls newspaper closes its printing press. He said the Tribune will help those employees receive unemployment assistance and help them find new employment, including possible jobs at other Gannett locations.
Fasbender said she hopes some of them will consider applying for jobs with Helena’s press and packaging team.
Higgins also told the AP that the change will not impact newsroom or advertising jobs.
"The Tribune remains committed to pursuing great journalism, effectively serving our advertisers and working for the greater good of our communities while at the same time positioning ourselves for an increasingly digital and mobile world. We remain deeply committed to serving the Great Falls and the surrounding communities," Higgins said.
