A Butte man was in jail Monday for making an illegal upgrade in pickup trucks.
A couple living on Durant Canyon Road in the Fairmont area say someone drove up to their house after 8:30 a.m. Friday, left a 1995 Toyota pickup then got in their 2003 GMC pickup and took off. They had left their keys in their own truck, police said.
Police sent out word on the stolen truck and a short time later, a Montana Highway Patrol trooper found it abandoned in the Ramsay area. Then, not long after that, police spotted a man hitchhiking along Interstate 90.
They stopped to question him and found out he was 43-year-old Timothy John Combo of Butte — the registered owner of the pickup left at the house on Durant Canyon Road.
It was a “significant upgrade” in pickups, police said, but unlawful.
Combo told police that he made the switch because somebody was chasing him, but he was booked anyway for felony motor vehicle theft and a felony parole violation. He was still behind bars late Monday morning with no bond set.
Combo has a previous conviction for assault with a weapon and two previous convictions for partner/family member assault, all committed in Silver Bow County, according to the Montana Department of Corrections. He was sentenced to 84 months on the assault conviction in 2015.
