A 23-year-old Butte woman won’t do time for stealing more than $14,566 from her employer, Nordic Refrigeration in Butte, but she does have to pay back much of the money.

District Judge Kurt Krueger gave Tristina Lancaster a six-year deferred sentence Thursday and ordered her to make $9,566 in restitution to the business. Nordic’s insurance picked up the difference.

Lancaster previously pleaded guilty to felony theft as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors. If she pays back the money and abides by supervising terms over the next six years, the conviction can be dismissed.

“A deferred sentence is a really big second chance,” Krueger told Lancaster, suggesting she take advantage of it.

Prosecutors say Lancaster deposited money from the business into an account in her name on eight separate occasions between August 2017 and this past March. She did that by putting her private account on a debit- and credit-card reader at the business.
