Prosecutors say a 21-year-old Butte man had sex with a 15-year-old girl at least twice and knew she was underage.
Jeremiah Justin Williams, who recently turned 22, pleaded not guilty on Thursday to a felony charge of sexual intercourse without consent. In this case, it carries a minimum four-year prison term and maximum of life or 100 years.
District Judge Kurt Krueger accepted the not guilty plea and set the next hearing for June 18. Williams remains free on bond.
Police arrested Williams in late March but did not provide any details of the accusations. But they are included in charging documents prosecutors filed in April.
According to them, police became aware of allegations in early February that Williams was having sex with the teenage girl. During a forensic interview, she said she and Williams had become “more than friends” and she told him she wanted to have sex.
She says she also told him she was 15. In Montana, anyone under age 16 cannot consent to sex. At some point, prosecutors say, Williams knew she was 15 and said they had sex twice at his residence.
