Once again our BSB government is attempting to pass another ordinance, 16-2, "Vacant Buildings."
When is it going to stop? Why should residential property owners, landlords etc., be subjected to illegal administrative and warrantless searches and trespass to our private properties? This has all evolved because of one BSB Council Commissioner having issues with vacant property near theirs.
Is it a fair ordinance? No, because it should include "All Vacant Buildings." Property owners already pay enough in property taxes, let alone all new mill levies for every great idea government comes up with.
To impose fees and penalties sounds more criminal than a "volunteer program" as stated at a Council Meeting and in the Montana Standard, to "force" owners to maintain and fix those in bad shape. What about the elderly, handicapped, disabled, low income etc., that can't afford to live by everyone else's standards? They have already talked about what and where the monies collected will be allocated and for what Departments? They already get paid hourly and salaries. That money should be put into a fund and along with grants creating a program to help people with improvements to their properties so they don't lose them.
Let's not forget the most important thing besides, "people before profit": our Montana Constitutional rights as well as our United States Constitutional Rights which they are violating with this ordinance. There are already ordinances in place that cover vacant buildings and decay with the proper enforcement. Also there is already an inventory of all buildings and their state of decay or repair on file.
Anyone with interest in this matter should come to the Council of Commissioners Meeting on June 1 at 7:30 p.m. and voice your opinion.
