I find it unconscionable that Senator Daines voted against the confirmation of Dr. Carla D. Hayden as the 14th Librarian of Congress. Dr. Hayden is a graduate of the University of Chicago. She has served for 23 years as the Chief Executive Officer of the Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore, a world-renowned institution.
Seventeen other GOP Senators joined Daines in voting against Hayden’s confirmation. It appears that they bought the reasoning of Hans von Spkovsky of the far-right Heritage Foundation. He testified that Dr. Hayden was “an unqualified, far-left progressive.” Nothing was said about the fact that Dr. Hayden would be the first trained librarian to be the Librarian of Congress. Since the post of Librarian of Congress was created in 1802, not one librarian was schooled to be a bona fide librarian.
Dr. Hayden will not only be the first credentialed librarian, but she will be the first woman and the first Black American to hold that position. When it comes down to it, Senator Daines has no leg to stand on in defense of his vote.
