Goldstone Fire

The Goldstone Fire on Aug. 7.

The Goldstone Fire grew from 125 acres to about 440 acres between Tuesday and Thursday. The fire is zero percent contained.

On Wednesday, fire activity increased due to hot, dry temperatures and winds. These weather conditions are predicted for the area over the next couple of days, so fire behavior is expected to increase.

The fire has burned up toward the Continental Divide, crossing the Montana-Idaho state line. About 25 acres of the fire is now in Idaho, burning in the Salmon-Challis National Forest. Today, there are 40 fire personnel working on the fire. The Salmon-Challis National Forest is assisting with firefighting efforts with a helicopter that is dropping water on the Idaho side of the fire.

The increase in fire activity closes the section of the Continental Divide Trail starting at Lemhi Pass and continuing north to Jahnke Mine. The Reservoir Lake Campground and the Bloody Dick Rental Cabin are also closed. A temporary re-route of the trail is in place, and hikers are advised to travel east down from Lemhi Pass to the Lewis and Clark trail/road, then travel north on a series of roads through the Selway and Saginaw drainages which connect back to the Continental Divide Trail at Forest Road #7325, or Berry Meadows Road.

There is no update for the Medicine Lake 2 and Virginia Creek fires at this time.
