Eight children are safe after a Whitehall School bus caught fire Friday morning on the way to school.

Montana Highway Patrol dispatch received a call at 7:49 a.m. from another motorist who saw the flames, which apparently were coming from beneath the bus. Trooper Renee Grimsrud said the bus driver did not notice.

Grimsrud approached the bus as it was stopped for a train and informed the driver of the flames. The driver and eight children on board evacuated the bus, which continued to burn.

Grimsrud said it's too early in the investigation to know the exact cause of the fire, but she said she believed the brakes were burning, which later caused a tire to pop.

The children were put on another bus heading to Whitehall School.
