The Bureau of Land Management’s Butte Field Office has closed its Toston Dam Recreation Site after heavy weekend rains triggered a gradual landslide on the site’s only access road.
According to Butte BLM Field Manager Scott Haight, the Broadwater County road began gradually sliding on Friday about a mile from the recreation area. An engineering firm has plans to repair the road, but Haight said Tuesday the damage is significant. It will most likely be weeks before access is restored.
“At some point things start to move, especially with the combo of heavy rain and this area’s geology,” Haight said. “Once the county tells us the route is safe for public use, we’ll reopen the campground.”
The Toston Dam recreation site southeast of Townsend provides public access to fishing, camping and a boat launch. The site is the only area affected by the landslide. No one was injured.
