Projection artist Craig Winslow poses in front of a projection he made for the ghost sign in the alley off of Granite Street in Uptown Butte on July 2. The Portland-based artist was in Butte scouting for ghost signs that he can work with on a future project when he returns to Butte in 2019. Winslow's series is called "Light Capsules", and with the help of an assistant and a small generator, the artist is able to cast a series of light projections that take viewers through the life of the ghost sign. Winslow, who recently won a creative residency with Adobe, has been traveling to several locations from Detroit to Winnipeg, Canada, bringing the old signs to life without repainting or altering the signs. With his projections, he is also able to bring to life the palimpsest works that have been painted over multiple times with different signs. "Butte is considered a gold mine for ghost sign enthusiasts," said Winslow, adding that he is excited to return to do more work.
