Former Butte resident Nielsine Lowney Wayrynen, 95, passed away at her home in Surprise, AZ on June 4, 2019.
Nielsine was born November 5, 1923 in Butte to Edward J. and Rosanna Lowney. She attended Monroe School and graduated from Butte High School in 1941. On July 26, 1942 she married her high school sweetheart Reino J. “Ray” Wayrynen. They celebrated 60 years together until his passing in 2003.
She was an accomplished musician, having received a baby grand piano for her 11th birthday. Her father paid 50 cents a week for this gift, which will now be passed on to her great-granddaughter. She played piano for many organizations and continued to “practice” at least one hour a day until recently when arthritis in her hands prevented her from doing so.
Nielsine and Ray purchased Sherman and Reed Mortuary in 1957. The name was changed and they built Wayrynen Funeral Home. She was one of two female licensed funeral directors in Butte and was also the organist and office manager throughout her career.
Nielsine was active in many organizations. She was Past Noble Grand of Silver Leaf Rebekah Lodge, which she joined in the 1940’s. She was a 50 year member and Past Worthy Matron of Butte Chapter #39, Order of Eastern Star and Past Queen of Tirzah Temple #3, Daughters of the Nile.
She was proceeded in death by her parents, Ed & Rosanna Lowney, husband Ray, infant son Lee, sister and brother-in-law Julia and John Lovell, brother and sister-in-law Ed and Mary Lowney and son-in-law Dana Monaco.
She is survived by daughter Linda Monaco, Surprise, AZ, granddaughters Karen Atkinson, Phoenix, AZ and Kathy Atkinson, Rapid City, SD, great-granddaughter Annika Stephens, Rapid City, SD and several nieces and nephews.
Her remains have been cremated and private family services were held in AZ. Inurnment will be in Mountain View Cemetery at a later date.
Camino del Sol Funeral Chapel in Sun City West, AZ was in charge of arrangements.
