March 21, 1919-Sept. 12, 2018
Mary Catherine Sweeney Watters was born March 21, 1919 in Seattle, Washington in the Bain Apartments on Jackson Street, and passed away peacefully at her home in Spokane, Washington, surrounded by her loved ones on Sept. 12, 2018.
Mary grew up on Lewisohn Street in Butte, Montana. She graduated from Girls Central High School. She then attended St. James Nursing School. For a short time she worked at St. James Hospital before working for an urologist at the Murray Clinic.
Mary met Bruce Watters on a blind date at a military dance in Dillon, Montana. They married three months later on July 1, 1952. Mary and Bruce raised five kids in Dillon, Montana -- Mary Jane, Karen, Bruce, Terry and Susie. They purchased the Oasis Café in 1959 and owned it until 1971. Mary then worked as a home health nurse for 13 years. After retirement she enjoyed volunteering at the Bargain Basement at the St. Rose of Lima Church in Dillon.
Mary was a lover of sports and an avid football fan. She loved attending her brother’s football games across the country. The Watters family had many vacations from visiting all the state capitals in the Western states, day trips to Yellowstone Park, and trips to Helena visiting museums and the capital. While Bruce was postmaster in Dillon, they traveled across the country to many conventions where they met lifelong friends. She enjoyed spending time with her kids and grandkids.
Mary is survived by her children, Mary Jane Watters, Karen (Pete) Mast, Bruce (Mary Ann) Watters, and Susie (Doug) Barth; grandchildren, Kevin and Theresa (Francesca) Dryden, Tanner and Austin Barth; sister-in-law’s Jean and June Sweeney; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bruce; son, Terry; parents, William and Kate; sisters, Jean Williams and Helen Thomas; and brothers, Dan, Kevin, Bill and Jim.
No services are planned at this time. Donations can be made to a local hospice.
