June 30, 1940-April 14, 2019

Mrs. Marcia Ann Field Cadigan, a deeply devout Roman Catholic, passed away on Palm Sunday, April 14, 2019, in Butte, MT, where she was born on June 30, 1940. Marcia was lovingly surrounded in prayer by her children, brother, and sister-in-law.

Marcia married the love of her life, J. Wayne Cadigan, Sr., who predeceased her. Wayne was also born in Butte. Together, they were the loving parents of 8 children. In 1973, the Cadigans moved to Billings, MT, following Wayne’s promotion with US West phone company. After retirement, Marcia and Wayne returned to Butte, spending time with family and golfing under the Big Sky.

Marcia demonstrated consistent, selfless caregiving to a large extended family. She prayed family members into this world, and held their hands and prayed them out of this world. She spent countless hours and days ministering to over a dozen loved ones in the end stages of their lives. Marcia loved babies, and babies loved her. She and Wayne were blessed with 8 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Nothing, not even a round of golf, brought them a higher level of pure joy than showering their little ones with love. Marcia knew how children thought and felt. She became widely known for creating care packages with toys, treats, goodies, and surprises as she sent family on the road after a visit of laughter and silliness. She dubbed these care packages “a party for the road.”

Marcia was selfless and caring, and also private and independent. Blessed with the Irish gift of the gab, her great eloquence and charm allowed her to talk to anyone about anything. It was said that she never met a stranger. Her profound faith and remarkable intellect helped her to help others.

Preceding Marcia in death were her parents Margaret and Charles Field, her husband J. Wayne Cadigan, Sr., children, Christopher, and, infant twins, Patricia & Boniface, her sister, Sister Patricia Field, and her grandson Andy Price.

Surviving Marcia are her children J. Wayne Cadigan, Jr. & Nancy, Cynthia Cadigan Smith and Paul, Kenneth Cadigan, Daniel Cadigan and Scott Clark, and Tammi Cadigan Allison and Bruce. Her brother and sister-in-law Charles and Ann Marie Field. Her grandchildren Corey, Kelly, Nathaniel, and Troy Smith, Luke Allison, James and Thomas Cadigan, and Keeley Price. Her great-grandchildren Kess, Kira, Natasha, Evan, Chloe, and Ryker.

Marcia retired to Big Sky Senior Living, where she found a second family among the residents and staff. She enjoyed a million dollar view of the Rocky Mountains. She was known for saying the Rosary prayer in a grand alcove facing east in the morning and another alcove facing west in the evening. Marcia was a fixture of and caretaker to that community. The family thanks those residents and the staff with all their hearts. The family also thanks the loving staff at St. James Hospital who cared for her.

Friends may call on Wednesday after 10:00 am in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 am. Rite of Committal will follow in Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to The Butte Emergency Food Bank.
