Lewis Rotering passed away at St. James August 18, 2019 due to complications with Pneumonia. He was born in Butte on June 28, 1941 to Lewis and Catherine Rotering and was the eldest of 4 children.
Lewis graduated from Boys Central and then attended Carroll College and University of Montana. Lewis returned to Butte to marry, start a family, and serve his community. He spent his career working at the Butte Sheltered Workshop, where he committed to making life better for those in need.
Lewis was a fiercely proud of Butte and his Irish Catholic heritage. In his younger days he was an avid outdoorsman; his passions include fishing, hunting, hiking and rafting. He also served his community as the Chief of the Big Butte Volunteer Fire Department for many years. In his later years he could be found at breakfast every morning reading the paper at Gamers or Park & Main Cafe, driving to Fairmont in his coveted Mustang convertible, working his recovery program, and most importantly to him supporting others in their path to recovery from drugs and alcohol.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Catherine Rotering, as well as his youngest sister, Mary Petty.
He is survived by his sister, Denise Derby and her daughter and granddaughter, Erin and Audin Derby; his brother, Steve Rotering; his eldest daughter, Catherine Rotering, and his youngest daughter and her husband, Stephanie and Scott Pushkaric, and his two grandchildren, Sydney and Sarah Pushkaric. He also is leaving behind his sister Mary’s children, Maurine, Lewis, Moses and Noah Petty, as well as her stepchildren, Michelle and Thomas Petty.
Lewis loved his community, friends and family dearly. If you wish to pay your respects please do so by cherishing the life you have, serving those around you who are less fortunate, and never missing an opportunity to tell those who are important to you how much you love them.
The Rite of Committal will take place on Friday (today) at 12:00 PM (noon) in the Columbarium of Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery.
