John Roland Smathers, 25, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2018 in Billings, MT. He was born on February 14, 1993, the son of Roland Smathers and Michele Norton. John graduated from Anaconda High School in 2011. He started his career as a concrete mason with LeProwse Construction and was employed by Sletten Construction at the time of his death.
John was a young man enjoying his life with his family, friends and his dogs, Zeke and Keeta. He especially enjoyed being outdoors, snowboarding, hunting, camping and riding ATVs with friends and family. He was a very caring and compassionate man, willing to help those who needed it, making many friends along his way.

John will be greatly missed by his parents, Michele Norton and Roland (Sara) Smathers, Brother Ashton Whalen, Grandparents Bob and Marlene Chandler, Aunts Sherri (Scott) Stuber, Rolanda Smathers (Mike), Kristina (Lehde) Facundus, Christopher (Kristin) Norton, Cousins Katy Stuber, Kim (Tristan) Schaub, Jessica Hiltz, Jonathan (Chelsea) Hiltz, Flint and Riley Croy, Donnegan, Jaeger, Jax, and Gus Norton and godson, Micah Beaver. Numerous great uncles, aunts and friends.
John was preceded in death by his grandfather’s Roland Smathers, Daniel Norton, Ernest Haakaeson and Grandmothers Dorothy Pidgon and Vicki Haakenson.
A Celebration of his life with be held at the Anaconda VFW (4th and Chestnut Street) Friday, Nov. 30, 2018 at 12 p.m.
