April 11, 1940–April 11, 2019
JoAnn Lyons peacefully entered the heavenly kingdom on her birthday, April 11, 2019. During the past 5 years, she gracefully endured many difficult health issues, including two battles with cancer. She never complained and was always worried about everyone else. JoAnn was a loving person and a positive role model that touched the lives of many people.
JoAnn was born on April 11, 1940 to Joseph and Margaret Feeney. She was the first of three Irish daughters. She attended St. Joseph grade school and Girl’s Central High School, continuing her education at Western Montana College earning a degree in Elementary Education. Later, she attended the University of Montana, furthering her education by receiving a degree in Special Education. Her first teaching assignment was in Sequim, Washington, followed by a 6 year teaching stint in Hayward, California. She returned to Butte in 1970 to teach in the Butte school system. She later taught Special Education at the Ramsay school district where she finished her career. JoAnn had a great love of children and was a very dedicated educator.
She married John Lyons in 1971. Together they had two daughters Beth and Becky. They spent many memorable summers at their cabin in Elk Park, swimming, caring for animals, and entertaining friends and family. JoAnn deeply loved her family and was devoted to their happiness. She and John created memories for them that will last generations.
JoAnn enjoyed reading, playing cards, attending the Mother Lode concerts, going to dinner with friends, and of course she loved a good episode of CSI. She enjoyed having Sunday dinners and playing games at her daughter Becky’s house and cherished spending time with Beth and her family at their cabin on Big Sky Lake. Most of all she treasured her special time with her grandchildren. She supported them in every way and enjoyed watching them participate in their many activities.
JoAnn is survived by John, her daughters and spouses Beth & Mickey McCarthy, Becky & Doug Peoples, her sister and brother-in-law Sue and Bob Meredith, brother’s-in-law and wives, Fran ( Robin) Lyons, Jerry (Kim) Lyons, and Dick (Bonnie) Lyons, nephews Mark and Mike Meredith, and many cousins and dear friends. She is also survived by, and will be dearly missed by, her beloved grandchildren, Shelby Paffhausen, Dougie & Ryan Peoples, and Danny & Kennedy McCarthy.
She is preceded in death by her parents and her younger sister Patti Feeney Cooper.
JoAnn was generous and kind to all, she always did the right thing, and her faith was the center of her life. We were all so very blessed to have her, she was truly a gift in our lives. She leaves behind a void that can never be filled, but a legacy of love that will forever live on.
Services will be held Tuesday for JoAnn at the Immaculate Conception Church beginning with visitation at 10:00 AM followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM.
Memorials in honor of JoAnn are requested to Butte Central Education Foundation in care of Mairissa’s Way or to the charity of donor’s choice.
