March 9, 1928-Nov. 28, 2017
Emphrey Eugene “Gene” Hildreth, 89, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2017 in assisted living in Bozeman, after an extensive time living with congestive heart failure.
He was born the third of six sons on March 9, 1928 in Dillon, Montana, to E.W. (Bob) and Bessie Hildreth. Gene spent his childhood on the ranch in Medicine Lodge and graduated high school in Dillon. He married Winibel Jo (Wini) McMannis in 1948. They had three children: Bernice, Julie and Craig. Gene and Wini divorced in 1979. He married Carol Stewart in 1980 and together they guided daughter Sherrie through high school. Gene and Carol divorced in 1987.
He went into the garage business in 1949 in Armstead, Montana, then he sold the business in 1958. With the construction of the Clark Canyon Dam in 1961, he moved the family to Dell, where he continued the family tradition of ranching in the area for the rest of his life. He turned his skills to wood working in his later years and made beautiful items out of many kinds of wood. We were always amazed with his mechanical skills and his ability to build or fix about anything. Always a generous and giving gentleman, Gene had a quick smile.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Henry (Pat), Robert (Bill), Wini and Bernice.
He is survived by brothers, Lowell, Raymond (Darlene), Edward Barton (Eathal) Hildreth; children, Julie (Bill) Glauber, Craig (Rhonda), son in-law Mike Danzer; grandchildren, Jennie Hildreth Kramer, Jesse Hildreth, and Jon Danzer; four great-grandchildren; also Carol, Sherrie Hebert, special friend Darlene Brown and families. Cheers and thank you to Gene’s friends!
A memorial service is planned for 1 p.m., Dec. 18, at the Elks Lodge, 27 E. Center St., Dillon.
