Edward Holmes

After a very long year of fighting that awful disease known as cancer, Edward Holmes, 59, lost the battle on Wednes-day, Oct. 9, 2013, with his loving wife at his side

Edward Roger Holmes Sr. was born in Butte, on Oct. 25, 1953, to Roger and Edna (Fuller) Holmes. He was educated in Butte, graduating from Butte High School in 1971. Ed had belonged to Laborers Local 1668 for 40 years and worked for Butte-Silver Bow for 25 years. Ed married Frances Stewart, the love of his life, on Dec. 1, 1978, and would have celebrated their 35th anniversary this year.

Ed spent many years drag racing with his sons at Lost Creek Raceway. He enjoyed his time being the crew chief for his sons and brought home numerous trophies. Over the years, he had gotten his wife and his dad racing at the drag strip, too.

After retirement, Ed found himself busier than ever watching over his grandchildren. He was often seen pushing a stroller all around Uptown Butte and playing at the city parks he labored so hard at before retirement.

Almost every Friday night for more than 20 years, you could find Ed and Frances with their good, lifelong friends Pat Holland and his wife, Karen enjoying dinner at their favorite restaurant.

“Pa,” “Gramps” or “Papa Ed” was the rock of our family; he cared for everyone else with so much loving devotion right until his illness would not allow him to. He was a caring husband, thoughtful father and loving grandfather who will be deeply missed.

Ed is survived by his wife; son, Patrick Kueffler and daughter-in-law, Jennifer of Butte; son, Edward Holmes Jr. and daughter-in-law, Amanda of Clarkston, Wash.; grandchildren, Ember and Dillon Kueffler; sister, Linda Lee Holmes; brother, Mike and sister-in-law, Tracey Holmes and their children Michael, Andrew, Ashley and Courtney; brother-in-law, Rob Ferris and his children, Chad, Brad and Jodi.

Ed was preceded in death by parents, Roger (Boze) and Edna (Tiny) Holmes; granddaughter, Sierra Kueffler; sister-in-law, Ettasue Ferris; and father-in-law, Floyd Stewart.

Relatives and friends may call from noon to 1 p.m. Friday in the Duggan Dolan Chapel for visitations. A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. in the mortuary chapel. Private placement of ashes will take place at a later date.

Memorials may be made to Lost Creek Raceway, Box 655, Anaconda, 59711; Highlands Hospice, 3703 Harrison Ave., Butte, 59701; or a charity of your choice.
