Jan. 28, 1941-March 29, 2019

On March 29, 2019, Cortlandt L. Freeman, of Butte, passed away peacefully at his home. Cort was born in Denver on January 28, 1941. He was the youngest of five children to Frank and Katherine (Maroney) Freeman. He attended Hebron Academy in Maine and Fairfield University, before returning to Colorado to work as a reporter for the Rocky Mountain News and the Aspen Illustrated News.

In the 1970s, he moved to Bozeman to pursue a career as a freelance writer, publishing a book on backcountry skiing for Sports Illustrated and numerous articles on fishing, hunting, and skiing. He married Mellda Clauss, a teacher from Buffalo, NY in Bozeman in 1980.

In 1983, Cort and Mellda moved to Butte, where he began a 20-year career with the Montana Power Company, eventually retiring as Vice President of Corporate Communications.

He is survived by his wife, his children, Cortlandt Grant, Michael, Katherine, Nicholas, and Christopher, and seven grandchildren. He lived a life full of great stories, and he loved to tell them.

Friends may call this Monday after 5 p.m. at St. Patrick’s Church. Parish Vigil services will be conducted at 6 p.m. in the Church. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the Church.
