Mountain lion spotted in Butte

Butte-Silver Bow police say they received reports of a mountain lion sighting in Butte early Thursday morning.

Sheriff Ed Lester said the animal was spotted in the area of the Hillcrest addition and Columbia Gardens subdivision.

A resident in the Hillcrest addition reportedly saw and heard a mountain lion around 1 a.m. Thursday. Another reported hearing the animal around the same time.

Lester said officers responded to the area after they received the first report in the early morning but were not able to locate the cat when they arrived.

“It’s not normal to see a cat like that in this area,” he said, adding that the mountain lion was likely hunting deer that frequent the area.

Lester said a mountain lion was spotted in the same general vicinity and around Skyline Park about a month ago. People residing or walking in the area should take extra caution, he said.

Anyone who sees a mountain lion should not physically approach or shoot the animal, he said.

“I’m not too concerned that someone will shoot it. I’m more concerned that if someone had a pet, a mountain lion could attack it,” Lester said.

He requested that people notify police immediately if they see one so it can contact the Montana Department of Fish and Game.
