A 56-year-old Montana Standard delivery driver who was involved in a serious one-vehicle rollover crash remains hospitalized after undergoing a six-and-a-half-hour surgery late Wednesday, newspaper administrators said on Thursday.
According to administrators, the driver fractured her back and neck and incurred severe head injuries. As of Thursday afternoon, hospital personnel were monitoring her for brain swelling.
The accident occurred around 1:40 a.m. on Wednesday when the driver was travelling near mile marker 9 on U.S. Highway 12. The cause of the accident is still unknown, but newspaper administrators believe the driver swerved, over-corrected, and rolled her vehicle several times. After the accident, she was flown via Life Flight to Missoula for treatment.
The driver was transporting about 1,000 papers from Helena to Anaconda, Deer Lodge, and Opportunity subscribers.
