Firefighters on Monday continued to fight a mine tunnel fire after it broke out Sunday at the Mountain Con mine yard.
A citizen on Sunday first reported smoke coming from the hoist house, where firefighters found heavy smoke pouring from an underground tunnel.
A backhoe dug into the tunnel to get at the fire, which firefighters then extinguished.
However, firefighters were called back on Monday and discovered smoldering material coming from the same tunnel. Official determined it was too dangerous to put men in the tunnel, and decided that they would need to dig further to expose the material.
As of about 4 p.m., fire officials were still trying to arrange further digging. They said the fire presents to danger to the adjacent hoist house.
Details on cause of the blaze were unavailable.
