Jean McGrath, editor of the Butte's Heritage Cookbook, died Saturday, April 13, in Helena, at the age of 98.
The cookbook was a project for the Silver Bow Bicentennial Commission in 1976. It included 290 pages of unique recipes and stories featuring the cultural heritage and foods of the ethnic nationalities that settled and lived in Butte. It is currently in the 11th printing and is widely available throughout Montana.
All the proceeds from the book sales have gone to the Butte Arts Council for the purchase and maintenance of the historic home of Charles W. Clark, corner of Broadway and Washington streets, and current home of the Clark Chateau.
“She interviewed dozens of Butte cooks and personally made or sampled every recipe,” said her son, Mike McGrath. “Although a massive undertaking, it was always a labor of love,” he said.
