Kellie Kahtani, Montana State University Extension agent for Butte-Silver Bow, is expected to roll out a mental health first aid course in the months ahead.
Kahtani said the 8-hour course will allow adults and youth to become certified in mental health first aid.
Kahtani herself is certified, and she said the course is intended to educate students on suicide prevention and on the signs and symptoms of mental health issues such as depression and anxiety.
The MSU Extension agent says that, through the course, she wants to help remove the stigma of mental health issues and help people feel comfortable having difficult conversations with those they think might be struggling.
The course doesn’t have a set date yet, but Kahtani hopes to get it started in April.
Kahtani has been serving as the MSU Extension agent for Butte-Silver Bow since June 2017. Originally from Washington, she formally taught high school agriculture and was an advisor for the Future Farmers of America organization.
