Anaconda's Christmas stroll, tree-lighting begin with Santa's arrival

Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus decorate the storefront of a downtown Anaconda business. The Anaconda Christmas Stroll launches at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 24, in the Anaconda Common park in the center of town.

ANACONDA -- Pleasant winter temperatures are predicted for Anaconda's Tree Lighting Ceremony and Christmas Stroll set for Friday, Nov. 24, at the Anaconda Common, where Santa is expected to arrive by fire engine at 6 p.m.

Festivities will take pace in the newly renovated bandstand, where an introduction by emcee Jim Morley of Ace Hardware will be followed an invocation offered by Reverend Mike O'Rourke.

Then, Santa will draw the names of lucky winners of $750 in Anaconda Christmas Cash and gift certificates.

Hot drinks will be served at the gazebo at Durston Park, on the corner of Park and Main Streets.

Also at Durston Park, the Anaconda Pintler Hospice will present the Season of Remembrance memorial luminary display from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The Anaconda Garden Club will offer for sale local Author Marian Geil's book "The Smelter Mouse" on the steps of the Montana Hotel, where windows are decorated with scenes from the children's Christmas story.

Wells Fargo Bank workers will hand out glow sticks for children under the Anaconda arch at the common to light the way as children parade with Santa to the downtown area, where streets will be closed from 5 to 9 p.m.

After the children's parade, Santa will pose for family pictures at the visitor center, and children will also receive free candy canes donated by the Rotary Club at the chamber of commerce.

Mannequins will pose in the windows of downtown businesses during the stroll, and students — under the direction of music teacher Kim Lorengo — will circulate throughout the evening, entertaining with Christmas carols.

Food and refreshments will also be sold downtown during the stroll.

Other stroll button drawings are set for Good Neighbor Day on Sunday, Dec. 3, at the chamber of commerce.

Also on Good Neighbor Day, an ice sculpture demonstration by Cory Gransbery will take place at noon. At 1 p.m., the Anaconda High School jazz band will perform under the direction of instructor Spencer Fehr.

And, a drawing for a gift basket filled with merchandise from local businesses will be held at 2 p.m.

On Sunday, Dec. 10, another stroll button drawing will be held at 2 p.m. at the chamber of commerce for $250 in Christmas cash and gift certificates.

The fourth and final stroll button drawing will be held on Sunday, Dec. 17, at 2 p.m. at the chamber of commerce for $250 in Christmas cash and gift certificates.

Stroll button numbers will be posted around town at participating merchants for additional giveaways.
