Butte-Silver Bow dispatch alerted law enforcement about a suspicious incident in the East Lake Street area on Monday.

According to Undersheriff George Skuletich, a woman called dispatch around 5:30 p.m. to inform police her 12-year-old, who attends East Middle School, had been approached by a man in a gray, two-door Jeep Wrangler near her bus stop after school. The woman told dispatch the man driving the Jeep asked her daughter if he could give her a ride. She said no and the driver sped away, Skuletich said.

The woman did not want to file a police report, so dispatch sent a brief of the incident out to all Butte-Silver Bow law enforcement officers, including Butte School District No. 1’s resource officer, Skuletich said.

Officers will be on the lookout for the gray Jeep, and all school principals should be notified.

“We’ve never had any child taken, but we have received calls like this before. I believe this is the first one this year,” Skuletich said.

Skuletich drove around the East Lake Street area near 12-year-old’s bus stop Tuesday after school and said he did not see the gray Jeep. He believes it will be hard to find.

He also said if kids do feel they are being followed by a vehicle, they should get out of the area quickly and go to the house of someone they know.
