Local Montana Highway Patrol troopers pursued a vehicle in a high-speed “twisty, turn-y tour of Butte” early Wednesday, according to a Montana Highway Patrol report.
According to MHP, troopers attempted to make a traffic stop on a vehicle near South Montana and Front streets around 1:20 a.m., when it took off. MHP said troopers pursued the vehicle until they lost sight of it around 1:30 a.m.
Butte police assisted MHP troopers in finding the vehicle, which was abandoned at the end of Virginia Street, MHP said.
As of Wednesday late morning, the occupants of the vehicle had not been located.
Assault of ex-girlfriend
Police requested an arrest warrant for a man who assaulted a woman in the 1700 block of Grand Avenue on Tuesday.
According to police, the woman was walking in the area when her ex-boyfriend saw her and jumped her. The man reportedly took her to the ground and started beating her.
A woman driving in the area witnessed the assault and pulled over to help the victim. The man took off running.
Police said the witness put the victim in her car, drove to a parking lot near East Middle School and called police.The victim had an active restraining order against her ex-boyfriend, and police said they have requested a warrant for his arrest from the county attorney’s office.
A 27-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly attempting to steal from both ACE Hardware and True Value stores.
Around 5:30 p.m., police received a call from True Value and Stokes store employees that informed them Austin Campbell had attempted to steal from their building.
Police said the employees had found Campbell trying to steal drills and power tools and attempted to stop him, when he took off running. Employees reportedly pursued Campbell on foot and were able to stop him near the Civic Center. When officers arrived, they took Campbell into custody.
The officers soon discovered Campbell had also allegedly attempted to shoplift power tools from ACE Hardware. He had reportedly placed these tools in a snow bank before going into True Value. Officers were able to locate the items and return them to the hardware store.
Campbell was cited for two shoplifting misdemeanors.
Arrested for DUI
Police arrested a 47-year-old woman for allegedly driving under the influence on Monday.
At 12:30 p.m., police received a call from a resident in the 2900 block of Busch Street who said Gwen Upham was intoxicated and not wanted there. While officers were on their way to the area, they received a second call informing them Upham had left and was in the McDonald’s parking lot.
Police found Upham waiting in line at the McDonald’s drive thru. Officers waited until Upham went through the line and parked in the restaurant’s lot before making a traffic stop.
The officers ran Upham through a field sobriety test, which she failed. Upham agreed to a Breathalyzer test, and blew over the legal limit.
Upham was arrested on several misdemeanors, including a Montana Highway Patrol warrant out of Powell County and citations for driving under the influence, driving with a suspended or revoked license and for not having vehicle registration.
