Winter hike

Winter explorers uncertain of where to travel, in need of outdoor buddies or looking for a trip leader can log on to the Montana Wilderness Association’s website to learn more about its 2019 Wild Winter Adventures.

The group offers outings like cross country skiing, survival skills and snowshoeing for people of all abilities.

The activities are organized by chapter area and are listed by when they are offered. Participants should provide their own skis, although snowshoes will be available on some outings. Not all of the trips are child friendly, and dogs are never allowed.

Here are a few upcoming outings offered across the state to whet your appetite for adventure:

Pryor Mountains loop: A moderately strenuous snowshoeing trip about six miles in length on Jan. 26. This is not an officially named trail, but makes use of old roadbeds. The hike climbs to a ridge with beautiful views of the Sage Creek Valley before a short but steep descent into a limestone- and pine-filled bowl. To register contact Aubrey Bertram at abertram@wildmontana.org or 303-956-5263.

Travis Peak: A strenuous snowshoeing trip on Feb. 2 about two to four miles long. The trail accompanies the old Park Ditch that wraps around the southwest side of Travis Peak near Helena. Once on the west side of the peak there are views of Red Mountain, Colorado Mountain, Black Mountain and the scenic roadless area spread out below. To register contact Bill Hallinan at wjhallinan@gmail.com or 406-461-9876.

Lake Alva: An easy cross country ski trip of about three miles on Jan. 19 near Seeley Lake. Public lands surround Lake Alva, which features an island that makes a tempting ski destination. To register contact Lee Boman at lee.boman@icloud.com or 509-521-3646.

Winter survival skills: Learn basic survival skills like fire by friction, finding/creating dry wood and tinder in wet conditions, winter shelter basics, self rescue and aid-less navigation, advanced knife skills, and more with expert guides from Ravenwood Outdoor Learning Center on Feb. 2 near Columbia Falls. To register contact Brett Holmquist at brett@ravenwoodolc.org or 406-260-8620.
