Public land hunters in southwestern Montana have gained a permanent easement to 3,400 acres of Bureau of Land Management ground in Hunting District 340.
Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks recently purchased a permanent road easement for $20,000 across private land in the Timber Gulch area of McCartney Mountain, three miles east of Glen.
FWP will convey the 0.14 miles of existing primitive road to the BLM. The primitive road connects a county road (Burma Road) to an open route on the BLM that is open year-round.

The road easement was purchased from the Garrison Big Hole River Ranch, which had been allowing goodwill access, and was funded by hunting license revenues through FWP's Access Public Lands program and through contributions from the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and local rod and gun clubs (Skyline Sportsmen Association, Butte; Beaverhead Outdoors Association, Dillon; and Jefferson Valley Sportsmen Association, Whitehall).
FWP has acknowledged that the area is over its population objective for elk. Consequently, the agency adapted a brow-tined bull or antlerless elk harvest opportunity for the entire season.
