An angler on the open water around the causeway between Hauser Reservoir and Lake Helena

An angler tries his luck Monday on the open water around the causeway between Hauser Reservoir and Lake Helena. Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is cautioning anglers about deteriorating ice conditions in the Helena area.

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is cautioning anglers about deteriorating ice conditions in the Helena area.

“The Helena area reservoirs still have ice that a few anglers are accessing in spots,” wrote fisheries technician Troy Humphrey. “However, conditions are changing daily and it is our recommendation that anglers do not attempt to venture out on the ice.”

The caution only reflects ice conditions and is not in response to a specific incident, such as an angler or vehicle falling through, he said. Water has begun to open up on Canyon Ferry Reservoir where the Missouri River enters, he said, and he noted a decrease in anglers on Hauser, Holter and the Helena Valley Regulating reservoirs.

FWP has ceased its weekly fishing report until open water boating season gets underway, Humphrey said.

“It’s getting pretty iffy, so when we think we’re putting people at risk, we try to err on the safe side," he said.

While temperatures will continue to fall below freezing through this week, the National Weather Service in Great Falls forecasts highs in the upper 40s to low 50s.
