Severed cow head found in Anaconda

Anaconda ranchers found the head of one of their cows in the middle of a road near the state land they lease on Sunday. They posted this photo, along with others, in the Uniquely Anaconda group page on Facebook.

Around 10 a.m., ranchers Darrell and Shauna Rogers called Anaconda Police to report the butchering of one of their cows.

Shauna said she and Darrell lease state land near Sand Hollow Road for their cattle. This road is frequented by hunters and cattle ranchers, she said, which is how they found out their cow was dead. Someone came to their house to tell them after seeing its head in the middle of the road.

The couple found the cow's head with its tongue missing and a cigarette in its mouth. Near it, they also found a cow elk head severed in a similar way with a Red Bull can next to it.

A severed cow elk next to a Red Bull can was also found near the severed cow head on Sunday.

"We have no idea why anyone would do this," Shauna Rogers said. "Poaching to fill their freezers is the only guess we have."

The ranchers and Anaconda Police only found the cow's head — no body or gut pile. Anaconda Police Chief Tim Barkell said there are no suspects at this time, but police called in the Montana Department of Livestock to help investigate. They will be speaking with the owners on Monday afternoon.
