Sheriff Ed Lester announced Wednesday that the Butte-Silver Bow Law Enforcement Department will conduct alcohol sales compliance checks over the next month or two.
Lester said the checks will involve a person between 18 and 20 attempting to purchase alcohol at a local business. The person will show his or her legal ID if store clerks ask to see it.
If a clerk sells these underage people the alcohol they attempt to purchase, police will issue them a citation, Lester said. In addition, Lester said the businesses that allow underage purchases will be reported to the State of Montana for non-compliance in the sale of alcoholic beverages.
Over this 30- to 60-day period, Lester said he is hoping for zero violations.
“I fully expect compliance will be very high. The businesses in Butte are pretty good about checking IDs and doing the right thing," Lester said.
