Bail jumper with gun resists arrest

Butte police were called to the Town Pump, Montana and Platinum, around 2:18 p.m. Monday on a report of a wanted man in a car. When officers arrived, they saw Gary Mattix, 29, and two others sitting in the vehicle. Police said when Mattix was told he was under arrest, he tried to flee but was tackled to the ground. During a pat down, police said Mattix told them he a had a pistol and knife, which police found along with a glass meth pipe and a scale.

Mattix was booked into jail for felony bail jumping, felony criminal contempt, carrying a concealed weapon, resisting arrest, and possession of drug paraphernalia. One of the other two people in the car, Arthur Kane, was arrested on a Montana Highway Patrol warrant.

Pedaling away

A Butte man wanted for violating parole in Missoula County took off on a bicycle when police spotted him near Majors and Massachusetts on Wednesday afternoon.

Police say James Jean Evans, 39, jumped off the bike and tried to climb a fence when officers got to him. They say they found a syringe filled with a brown liquid inside his backpack as well as prescription drugs that were not his and a small amount of marijuana.

He was arrested on felony complaints of violating parole and possessing dangerous drugs and misdemeanor complaints of obstructing a peace officer, possessing drug paraphernalia, and having drugs.

He was being held Thursday pending $5,000 bond.

Man accused of strangling

Police arrested a Butte man for allegedly strangling a woman as her three children locked themselves in a bathroom.

Officers were called to a disturbance in the 1400 block of Sampson Street late Wednesday afternoon, where a woman told police that Ricardo Valenzuela, 31, had come in drunk. She said she and one of her daughters asked him to leave, and he angrily approached the girl.

The woman said she intervened, and Valenzuela grabbed her by the throat and began strangling her. She appeared injured when police arrived, and they found the three kids locked in the bathroom.

Valenzuela was arrested for partner/family member assault and was jailed with no bond set.
