The Montana Tech football team earned a No. 20 ranking in this week’s NAIA Football Coaches’ Top 25 Poll.

The ranking comes days after a 37-20 home win against then-ranked No. 2 Carroll College.

Tech received 84 voting points in the poll.

It was the first time the Orediggers have been ranked since being ranked in the same spot in the Nov. 5, 2007 poll.

St. Xavier of Illinois retained the No. 1 position as the defending national champs opened the season 2-0. St. Xavier was voted first in both the postseason and preseason coaches’ polls.

Carroll College fell from No. 2 to No. 12 in the poll. It was the first time the Saints had dropped out of the top 10 since 2004, a year when the team was able to win the national championship.

Other Frontier teams in the Top 25 included Eastern Oregon at No. 8 and Rocky Mountain College at No. 19.

This week’s Frontier schedule will see Tech take on Montana Western in Dillon. Carroll College is set to host Rocky Mountain College in a matchup of two ranked teams.

Eastern Oregon gets a week off before hitting the road for a game at Carroll College on Sept. 22.

MSU-Northern will take to the road for a game against Dickinson State.

Southern Oregon has a bye week, then will face Dickinson State at home on Sept. 22.
