--A Try Hockey for Free event will be held from 12:30 until 2:30 p.m., Saturday at the Butte Community Ice Center.

The event is designed to introduce kids (aged 4 to 9) to the game of hockey at no charge.

A limited amount of equipment will be available and top-notch coaches will be there to help your child learn the basics of the sport.

The event is open to boys and girls, and previous hockey experience is not needed.

-- The Knights of Columbus Little Kid Basketball Program will tip off its 25th year on Saturday and is extending an invitation to girls and boys from pre-kindergarten through sixth grade to join in the celebration.

Girls and boys in pre-K through second grade will play from 9 to 10 a.m. using 8-foot baskets. Participants in the third and fourth grades will play from 10 to 11 a.m., with fifth- and sixth-graders going from 11 until noon.

There is no cost to participate, and participants will receive a T-shirt at the end of the season.

Dan and Tom Boyle, who currently run the program, are also looking for volunteers to help out on weekends.

--The Butte Community Ice rink at 1700 Wall St. will be open to the public on Sundays from 1 to 3 p.m. through Nov. 19.

The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for kids. Skate rental is available for an additional $3 charge. Call 498-1877 for more information.

--The MAC Holiday Hoops Basketball Tournament will take place on Dec. 29, featuring boys’ and girls’ divisions.

The tournament is open to boys and girls in third-through-eighth grade. Divisions will be set up for third and fourth graders, fifth graders, sixth graders, seventh graders, and eighth graders. Teams will play at least three games.

The deadline to register for the one-day event is Dec. 15.
