Former Butte High swimmer Lew Yong Gerbrandt was picked as the Big Ten Conference’s Swimmer of the Week after winning the 100-yard butterfly and the 200-yard individual medley at the Ohio State University Winter invite, held this past weekend in Columbus, Ohio.
The Purdue University senior also took part in the Boilermaker’s 200-yard medley relay, which captured first place in the event.
Gerbrandt made her splash at the age of 8 when she swam for the Butte Tarpons but made steady progress as time went on. She became one of the premier high school athletes while swimming for current Butte High swim coach Lynn Shrader.
She went on to win four state championships while representing the Bulldogs before taking her talents to Purdue.
Gerbrandt’s winning time in the 100 butterfly was 55.86 seconds – edging Miami’s Allison Pierce by .11 seconds. But perhaps her most impressive performance of the meet came in the 200 IM might have been more impressive. She trimmed 13 seconds off of her prelim time to win the A Final of that event.
She also swam the butterfly leg of the 200 medley relay, and was the only senior of the winning team.
Gerbrandt and the Boilermakers are in Ann Arbor, Michigan this week for the Big Ten Championships.
